Object Description

COLLYER's external pelvimeter with curved detachable arms, graduated in both centimeters and inches [0-16 inches, 0-40cm]. Arm movement is adjusted by a screw wing-nut. Suppier's name 'CANADIAN SURG.SUP.', 'MADE IN GERMANY' and 'CHIRON CHROME' stamped into the surface.

  • History of Use: Used to measure the diameter of the pelvis in relation to the birth of a baby in order to decide if a natural or operative vaginal delivery is possible or if and when to use a cesarean section. Used by Dr. Brabizon Hallowes [1885-1961] born in Australia he relocated to Vancouver in 1936 where he opened a general practice. In later life he moved to Saturna Island.
